Everybody knows that working legally in another country requires a work permit or work visa, which in turn requires that the work permit photo is done correctly for your application. Doing it wrong can have serious repercussions for your stay in the host country, such as the possibility of being deported back to your home country and your work contract voided, leaving you with a stain on your employment record that may affect your subsequent applications for work in the same country or in other countries.

What Are Work Permits?

Work permits can refer to an authorization letter issued by a company to its employees and is usually needed to enter the company’s host country if the employee is from a different nation. However, in the United States and Canada, as well as in most countries in Europe, they are synonymous with work visas.

Work visas are official documents granted to an individual wishing to take up paid employment in the host country. These are typical of a temporary nature and valid only for a set period of time.

In the United States, there are two types of work visas. One is the non-immigrant work visa, where the bearer typically has no intention of working for a permanent residence in the country. This is also known as the Temporary Worker Visa. The Permanent Worker Visa, on the other hand, is granted to people who want to live and work in the United States permanently. However, no matter what type of work visa you want, it is strongly recommended to speak with a lawyer about it.

Why Are Work Visas So Important?

Whatever the type of work visa you have procured for yourself and wherever the host country is, there are certain privileges that it gives to its bearer. We will show the advantages of having the US work visa while working in the country as an example. Here are some of the benefits that a work visa gives to an individual:

  • It gives you the right to be paid according to state and federal laws and regulations. An employee without a work visa often becomes, unfortunately, the target of unscrupulous business owners and is not given fair wages for his work. The worker will usually receive substantially less money for his hours worked than those who have legal work visas. Having a work visa guarantees that you will be paid like you are a citizen of the country itself, even if the visa is only temporary.
  • A work visa allows you to refuse work that you do not want. Illegal migrant workers are usually forced into jobs against their will that were not part of the “agreement” that they made with the business owner. Having a work visa allows you to refuse work that is not specifically stated in the signed contract.

Illegal migrant workers are stripped of any identification they may have as soon as they are arrested. This is not the case for workers who have official work documentation. They are not arrested and detained, in the first, allowing them to keep any identification they have with them, like their passports and company IDs.

If you don’t have proper working documents, you might be hesitant to report abusive or dangerous working conditions. Most illegal migrant workers fear deportation and the loss of income, so they will just grit their teeth and soldier on, heedless of the fact that their working conditions are not up to state or federal code. Working visas allow you to report such conditions as sexual harassment, fraudulent activities, and other dangerous situations without the fear of the business owner retaliating.

A work visa ensures that you are counted as a member of the United States workforce, and guarantees that you also have the same rights as any of the members. These rights include the right to be a member of and gain assistance from labor unions and to be recognized by immigrant rights organizations and national labor organizations.

All in all, these rights are summed up as the right to access the judicial system of the United States, ensuring that your rights as a migrant worker are protected and that justice is served when those rights are not recognized by your employer.

How to Ensure You Get the Correct Work Permit Photo Every Time

Photos for work permits usually have the same requirements as those for other visa types, regardless of the country that issues it. Here we will show the requirements for a proper work permit photo according to United States immigration laws and regulations.

  • The photo should be in color and taken by a digital camera. It can also be digitally scanned from a paper photograph but the original picture should be in color as well.
  • The size should be 2 inches on each side, resulting in a square aspect ratio. If scanned from a photograph, the source should measure 2 inches on each side as well.
  • It should be taken within 6 months prior to the application.
  • The entrant should fully face the camera, without tilting the face in any direction. The expression must be neutral and unsmiling, with both eyes open.
  • The facial features of the entrant should be clearly shown in the photograph. The picture should have no areas with pixelation or areas that are out of focus.
  • The head should be from 1 inch to 1 3/8 inches in size. This is roughly between 50% and 69% of the total height of the photograph.
  • The eyes should be located within the area 1 1/8 inches to 1 3/8 inches from the bottom of the photo.
  • The entrant is not allowed to wear any headwear, except for those required by the entrant’s religion. Even so, the headwear should not obscure any facial features.
  • Eyewear is not allowed either, except in cases where it is a medical necessity.

As mentioned above, having an invalid photo on your work permit can have serious consequences. It could waste hundreds or thousands of dollars and a lot of the entrant’s time so you should do it right the first time around. Let us help you. Visit mypassportphotos.com for details.
