How do I apply for a U.S. Passport Renewal in Nigeria?

When you apply for your U.S. passport renewal in Nigeria, there are two parts to consider:

  1. In-person application at the U.S. Embassy or Consulate: U.S. embassies and Consulates in Nigeria require in-person appointments for passport services and immigration services such as U.S. passport renewals. These appointments are available in Abuja and Lagos. Learn more about booking an appointment on the official Embassy website

This applies to all passport renewals, including adult passport applications, lost or stolen passport applications, and applications for minors.

  1. Online payment: Passport applicants wishing to pay passport fees online can do so via Pay.gov. If you choose this option, remember to bring the printed Pay.gov receipt with your Pay.gov Tracking ID as part of your application materials.

What steps do I have to follow to renew my passport?

While this seems daunting, don't fear. We’ve broken down every step into bite-size pieces so you can prepare accordingly:

  • Step 1: Complete Form DS-82: Fill out the online application form, ensuring you provide all the required information.

  • Step 2: Sign and date: Print out, sign, and date the passport application form.

  • Step 3: Prepare your photograph: Have a 2×2-inch passport photograph ready to go. Use our online passport photo service to ensure you have updated, government-compliant pics.

  • Step 4: Pay the passport fee: Pay the processing fee in U.S. dollars or the equivalent in Nigerian Naira. This can be paid in cash at the U.S. Embassy or Consulate or via a U.S.-issued credit card. Post office money orders are no longer an option. If you paid online, remember to bring your Pay.gov receipt!

  • Step 5: Appointment: Schedule your application appointment date. Arrive on time; being more than 15 minutes late will require rescheduling.

  • Step 6: Supporting documents submission: Bring all required documents to the appointment, including your old passport, birth certificate (if required), and marriage certificate (if requested).

  • Step 7: Processing time: Allow approximately three weeks for your passport to be processed.

  • Step 8: Passport collection: Once ready, the passport must be collected by you or an authorized representative. No appointment is needed for collection.

What are the requirements for a U.S. Passport Renewal application in Nigeria?
